Making Financial Education Fun Through 120 Video Lessons

How do you make financial education entertaining?

Greenlight is a financial platform for kids and teens. To educate and engage their young audience, the team asked us to create a series of 120 animated lessons for Level Up, an interactive financial literacy game within the Greenlight app.

However, it wasn't only kids they wanted to reach.

Our core challenge was crafting a high volume of exciting, educational, and eye-catching videos that would appeal to both the youth (age 8-18) and their parents—both easily distracted audiences. We began by developing three distinct design directions to create a visual identity that stood apart from Greenlight’s competitors but fit with their brand and market.

To nail the look, we tapped into ‘90s nostalgia.

Our three design versions were crafted to present information clearly and bring the information to life with joyful illustrations. However, we ultimately decided on a hyper-colorful direction, which included dynamic character illustrations that channeled a ‘90s throwback aesthetic (specifically to appeal to Millennial/Gen X parents).

In addition to the 120 45-second videos, we also designed a variety of supporting assets, including:

  • Thumbnails
  • Stickers
  • Lottie files
  • Project guidebook for designers and animators
  • 30 teacher’s guides (adhering to state and national education standards)

With these visual tools, Greenlight created an exciting opportunity to connect with their audience. Most importantly, with 2.8 million lessons completed, they were able to follow through on their mission: helping parents raise financially smart kids.
