Transparency International and Column Five Win Platinum at the 42nd Creativity Awards
June 19, 2012
Post by Column Five
Late last year, we were privileged to work with Transparency International to produce a motion graphic introducing their Corruption Perceptions Index to a wider audience.
We’re happy to announce that the motion graphic was awarded a Platinum Award by the 42nd annual Creativity International Awards, highlighting it as Best in Category for Audio Visual Presentation. We are prouder still that last year no Platinum Award was given for that category.
Project Lead Nick Miede describes the video and the challenges it presented: (more…)
Column Five Published in May’s Pacific Standard
May 25, 2012
Post by Column Five
For Pacific Standard’s May/June 2012 issue, Column Five collaborated with the magazine to produce an infographic describing the growth of the West Coast over the past 50 years. This two-page spread illustrates the rise of industry on the West Coast and examines the changes in immigration, manufacturing, and population growth over the past five decades.
We’re glad to be able to work with Pacific Standard as they transition to a new philosophy and direction. The magazine recently announced the appointments of the new Editor-In-Chief Maria Streshinsky, formerly with The Atlantic, and new President and Publisher P. Steven Ainsley, former publisher of The Boston Globe.
Continuing the tradition set by the now-rebranded Miller-McCune magazine, Pacific Standard will publish fact-based long-form journalism analyzing the world’s developing social and environmental issues, though now with a more modern look and feel. (more…)
Column Five Featured in Taschen’s Information Graphics

We were happy to receive a copy of the new book by Sandra Rendgen and Julius Wiedemann, Information Graphics (TASCHEN Books, 2012), and were highly impressed by this collection.
Information Graphics offers a comprehensive look at infographics, provides insight into the theory behind them, and includes fantastic examples of work. The book features essays from many industry experts, including Sandra Rendgen, picture editor at German publications including Vanity Fair and Die Welt am Sonntag; Paolo Ciuccarelli, associate professor at Politecnico di Milano; Richard Saul Wurman, cofounder of the TED conference; and Simon Rogers, news editor at The Guardian. In addition to these thoughtful reflections on infographic creation, Information Graphics highlights work from industry titans such as Nigel Homes, one of the fathers of information graphics.
It’s an impressive work: hefty, well organized, deeply interesting, insightful, and full of some of the best infographics to be published in the last several years.
We’re happy to be able to say that some of them are ours. (more…)
AIGA50 Award: Annual Report Design for Human Rights Campaign
February 08, 2012
Post by Column Five
We’ve recently had the privilege of working with the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) to design their 2011 Annual Report “Mobilizing The Road to Equality.” We had the opportunity to utilize infographic design throughout the annual report, which is one of the many ways that beautiful information design can be applied to effectively communicate a message.
We are also proud to announce that the 2011 HRC Annual Report recently won an AIGA50 award! You can check out the other projects in their gallery, and our individual entry here. We also want to congratulate Robert Villaflor, who we worked with closely at HRC, for winning another two AIGA50 awards for his work. The AIGA50 award is a juried exhibition that showcases 50 of the strongest examples of design produced in the DC region during the past two years. Their panel of judges, experts and leaders in design, evaluate work from print, narrative, and interactive media. The winners will be recognized on April 25, 2012 in an exhibition and reception in the Atrium of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
