We here at Column Five have been embracing health in the New Year, breaking in the office juicer, and getting more greens on Salad Wednesday. Led by some of our most conscientious coworkers, we enjoy a regular rotation of healthier snacks, too, like gluten-free chips and vegan cookies. We love the enthusiasm, of course, but we have noticed a trend in vegan conversations. The latest in our Visual Storytelling series explores this topic, which — don’t worry — has been approved by C5 resident vegan, Jake Kilroy.

Visual Storytelling: Most Annoying Social Media User
January 24, 2013
Post by Column Five
Social media is a great tool to connect us, but it’s also made us realize that maybe we don’t want to be connected to everyone. From Twitter to Tumblr, social media users are ruining our feeds with their blatant self-promotion, political rants, attention-seeking statuses, and those god-awful self-photos. Whether it’s your roommate, brother-in-law, or random professional acquaintance, many of these users have particular traits in common. But there is one person in particular who embodies it all. Find out who in the latest in our Visual Storytelling series.
Mashable’s Stephanie Buck on Virality and the Future of Content
January 22, 2013
Post by Column Five

Stephanie Buck, associate features editor for Mashable, helps oversee department strategy and features reporting. During her career in media, she has contributed to lifestyle and digital publications both national and local. A California transplant, she now lives in New York City in a tiny apartment overflowing with yoga mats, knitting needles, and craft beer. Given Mashable’s extensive social reach—boasting 20 million unique monthly visitors, 6 million social media follows, and roughly 60 articles tweeted per minute—we asked Buck for her take on shareable media and what makes for good viral content. Visual Storytelling: Time Spent on Instagram
January 17, 2013
Post by Lindsay Hathaway
Instagram has reinvigorated many artistic endeavors: social photo-sharing, old-timey photographic styling, and foodie dining excitement, to name a few. But none more so than the art of time-wasting. With their noses buried in their smartphones, you can bet most people are up to one thing—Instagramming. Last fall, information from Comscore even reported that users were spending nearly 1.5 times the amount of time on Instagram as they were on Twitter. And just today, Instagram announced it has reached 90 million total users, proving the app isn’t disappearing from peoples’ fingertips any time soon. If you’re wondering how on earth so much time is spent on Instagram, our Visual Storytelling pie chart breaks it down for you.

Visual Storytelling: Navigating a Large Convention
January 08, 2013
Post by Column Five
This week, more than a hundred thousand people—including a few members of the Column Five team—will be descending on Las Vegas for International CES, the world’s largest convention showcasing innovative consumer electronics and applications.
The 2013 convention will be the biggest ever, with 3,000 booths spread across 1.87 million net square feet of exhibit space. Innovative products from Pong to plasma TVs have all launched at CES, so we’re looking forward to getting a peak at what’s new for 2013 and beyond.
While we love the convention scene—and swag—navigating such a large floor can definitely be a bit overwhelming. The latest in our Visual Storytelling series takes a look at the day-by-day footpath many attendees are likely to follow.
Jason Oberholtzer on Chart Popularity
January 07, 2013
Post by Jason Lankow
In 2009, college friends Jason Oberholtzer and Cody Westphal started the Tumblr blog I Love Charts for themselves and friends. Over the years, the humorous data visualization blog has grown from seven followers to more than 200,000—positioning it as one of the most popular sites on Tumblr. The blog has expanded to include Twitter and Facebook social components and, as of May 2012, a paperback titled I Love Charts: The Book.
I Love Charts ranked No. 1 on The Huffington Post’s “33 Tumblogs You Need to Follow” and “23 Funniest Tumblr Blogs,” was named one of the “100 funniest Tumblrs…Ever” by the New York Observer, one of “The 90 Best Tumblr Blogs of 2011″ by BuzzFeed, one of the “10 Funniest Tumblrs” by The Guardian, and one of the “25 Genius Tumblrs You Should Follow” by CBS News.
A Brooklyn, N.Y, resident, Oberholtzer holds a B.A. in Comparative Literature and Music. In addition to overseeing the I Love Charts universe, he also curates the I Love Old Magazines Tumblog and writes for Forbes.com and elsewhere online. We asked Oberholtzer about the popularity and future of infographic innovation. (more…)
